We're queer*Newham is the most ethnically diverse place in England and Wales (1). As Newham residents, we are aware that diverse cultural perspectives bring a greater opportunity to create vibrant communities. We benefit significantly from the amount of events, spaces and organisations that are based in our borough. Besides all the wonderful things this melting pot of cultures and backgrounds can bring there are also challenges for some minorities due to prejudice and negative stereotypes.
The LGBTQ community is under-represented and we would like to change that. We believe our borough can become a safer and friendlier place for queer people to "live, work and stay" as the council promotes. We are currently reaching out to local and nationwide organisations, LGBTQ activists and speakers and to our community. We want to challenge prejudice and dismantle hate through raising awareness on LGBTQ issues, creating partnerships with organisations (including educational institutions and faith groups), promoting open conversations between residents and providing information on gender and sexual diversity. * Queer is an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities (1) 2016 Newham Council Communications 01189PPC |
